Wilder agreed to take the part, but only if he could do things his way. As interesting as it would have been for the members of Monty Python to appear in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Wilder imbued the character with an eerie calm that’s both enticing and frightening, and would have been hard to top.
